Oculoplastics

About Oculoplastics

Oculoplastics and Orbital Surgery as a super- specialty emerged recently. In India, it was properly recognized in late 80's; though many ophthalmologists were doing it as their personal level without naming it. Mostly the cases were obviously dealt by plastic surgeons and the orbit especially by neuro-surgeons. Most of the ophthalmologists even today like to deal with intra-ocular surgeries specially cataract that constitute the main bulk of the ocular surgeries. It was recognized as a separate specialty in 1989 when an official scientific body “Oculoplastics Association of India” was formally constituted by our pioneers in the field. The founder president was late Prof. D.B. Chandra of Allahabad and secretary Dr. A.K. Grover from New Delhi.

Oculoplastics refer to a large variety of surgical procedures which deals with eyelids, canthal anomalies, eye socket, ocular adenexal disorders, orbital and peri-orbital diseases and injuries and facial unwanted scars, creases, pigmentations and looks.
